175 mh system on the fritz

so i bought this metal halide system from a fellow reefer quite some time ago, and of course the first thing i did was set it up and made sure that it worked and it fired right up. well that was great but the problem is that after 5-10 minutes of running the light turns off and then restarts after a few minutes. something sounds loose inside the bulb and i saw a fragment of what looks like glass loose in there also. i need to know that its bulb or the ballast so i can plan accordingly. does anyone know how one would check or test an electronic ballast? i hate to go out and buy a new bulb when it really was the ballast...
