Clicking sound in tank question
This is my very first post, I just set up my RSM tank 5 days ago. I had 2 very large crabs in the live rock and I got them out by running tap water on them. There were 2 other crabs that I consider to be small and they are very hard to get out of the tank at this moment. so my question is that this morning I heard the clicking sound coming from my tank, so I investigated. I saw a small crab and a somewhat bigger than the small crab on the same rock and I am wondering if this clicking sound could be them telling each other stay away from me, I'll kill you. The sound was coming from where the crabs were. Or I have also seen the crabs clawing at the live rock seems like they are chipping at the live rock. Is this just me hoping I don't have a mantis shrimp in my tank.
Thanks, Scott |

could you post a pic of the crabs? It could be a mantis shrimp or a pistil shrimp. what type of live rock are you using and where did you get them from?

I am using Fiji live rock, and from doing my research they look like rock crabs. ( beady red eyes) I am not sure though to me It also looks like a type of xanthid or mithrax crab. They both have smooth shells and seems to be hairy legs. They are so small and Every time I go by the tank they seem to hide from me. they don't seem to camera friendly. But this morning is the only good view I had of them both, should of took a picture.

I am amazed how famous fiji live rock is.
Is most live rock from Fiji in the USA? I am not sure if mine is. sales guy told me most crabs with hairy legs are hunters. |

I had a mantis a few years ago.
I never saw it, just heard the clicking. I don't think it ever got a fish but I did have a lot of empty snail shells. I didn't get it out till I had to move my tank and broke it down. It was about three inches long. Gave it to a guy that had a small tank for it. |
