leathers and SPS

i have been asking around lately why our SPS hasnt been doing very well. Our perimeters, light and flow are all good but our sps are still not growing and are receading from the tips down. Today we were talking to someone at our LFS and we mentioned we had a pretty big toadstool in our tank and he told us that it could be the cause of our problems. Our toad stool is about the size of a dinner plate and we have several small colonies of acros. And there all in a 65. So we just wanted to get some opinions on having sps in the same tank as a leather. Thanks in advance for any info.

If they begin touching each other then you should either move the SPS or (gulp) frag that toadstool even though it is that size.

I too have in the past suspected my leathers to be the culprits in my SPS's decline from time to time but think after some adjustments to my maintenance routine have got it under control. I also use activated carbon from time to time as well.

I now do weekly to biweekly water changes 5-15G in my 180G and it seems to do wonders for my SPS. I've also adjusted my Mg levels to respectable levels@ 1300ppm. This seems to have revived all my SPS's over the last 6 months (color and growth), including the new water change routine (I used to do 20-25% bi-annual to quarterly changes).

HTHs,

Minh

I have a few leathers in my SPS tank. All have been in there for yrs, my yellow fiji is also the size of a plate. I have never had issues with SPS growth. I do weekly 10% water changes. And i move any SPS or LPS that is near the leather.

I had some kenya just touching candy canes and those went south while my mushrooms that were too close to my monti cap bleached it slightly.
