Sure why not but it would look weird and if you use caulpera might get out and take over your tank.

If you have no other place, better than nothing. A few problems would be:
1-inability to have a reverse lighting schedule to maintain pH. 2-keeping fish away for a true refuse from being eaten. 3-Maintaining enough flow but not as much as typical display turnover flow rates. It can be done though for some benefit. i.e. Marc's mandarin diner, rubble rocks to help with pods, etc. If you come up with an idea be sure to chronicle it on a thread. It could be interesting.

You can use macro algae in your main tank if that's what you're asking, and it is possible to section off the tank and put a refugium in there, but I would not count on that as the only method of filtering the tank because generally, for a refugium to be really effective, you want it to be BIG.
