feather dusters, trouble or helpful

i have 3 featherdusters and the poop soooooo much. the will sometimes have strings of poop hanging out of them like 5 or 6 inches long. i think they dodo more then the fish do. could this be a large part of a diatom buildup? what do you guys think?

I had a large Hawaiian feather duster for about 2 months and it never muddied the water from what I saw. However it slowly died over the course of a few weeks. It was slowly loosing its feathers until there were only a couple of small ones left. So then I put it out of its misery.
