Live rock can be removed from the tank, but organisms start dying when it's removed, which can be an issue. I wouldn't do it with a display tank that's running.

When I have scrubbed my rocks it was with a plastic bristle brush and like the other post things will die but that is why I remove water for a water change and keep the rocks in there. I scrub the rocks with the brush to remove unwanted items but this is sometimes just a temporary cure and may grow back depending on what may be feeding it.

What kind of algae is this? Hair algae, or more like a slimy film? Picture?
