Special Cases: Which fish are sensitive to which medications?
I posted this over in fish disease and treatment, but it didn't get as many replies as I wanted...
Hey all, So every once in a while I hear something thrown around like "____ fish are sensitive to copper" or "____ fish are sensitive to hypo". I know there are certain types of fish that do not take well to certain "treatments". I would like to get a list going of what fish not to treat with what medications or methods. Help other people (and their fish) learn from your mistakes! Specifically, I have heard that chromis, jawfish, and clowns are sensitive to copper. Any truth to these? Here is the other thread: http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...8#post12374828

Flame angels are sensitive to copper, according to Live Aquaria
I used copper on my chromis and they survived it 100% A former percula clown did not survive the copper process so there may be some truth to their being sensitive to copper |

In regards to copper, a lot depends on the formulation. For the basic ionic copper such as copper sulfate or citrate, lions, angels, butterflies and tangs are quite sensitive. While damsels, and this includes clownfish, are not sensitive. The biggest trick with ionic coppers is getting the dosage right, there is a very fine line between therapeutic and lethal. If one is going to use copper, my recommendation is to use Sea Chem's Cupramine as it's formulated in a way that has proven safe for even the known copper sensitive species.
In regards to hyposalinity, I've yet to find the fish that doesn't tolerate it.
