All I really wanted to do was watch American Idol...
So, as sad as that subject line is. My wife and I were just about ready to watch American Idol when I thought to myself it was a good time to put a phosphate removal pad inline because I had noticed some hair algae growth in the past two days. Although my PO4 tests all show no phosphate I was seeing some algae gather on the power heads and back glass so I decided to take action. I removed two of the carbon filter inserts in my Marineland filter and put a phosphate pad in place. Just then, my skimmer whet crazy and stated to put a furious amount of water and froth into the collection cup. I had no choice but to begin turkey basting out the excess. This lasted almost 2 hours and removed over 1.5 gallons of water from the display. I ended up having to mix salt and add back to the tank the displaced water. Is this typical of the addition of a po4 pad? This is the first time I used one. Should I have disengaged the skimmer. I will need to know this for future reference. Thanks for reading.

If the skimmer started sucking water through he air tube intake to the return; then that would account for what happened

Yeah, I thought of that but that wasn't it. The air intake was fine. The skimmer did settle out but again that took about 2 hrs. It was a crazy scene. I was on a chair, because my skimmer is an HOB model and running to empty containers of water. I did think to use a container that was 1.37 quarts, a juice bottle, so that I could know exactly how much water I would have lost in the end. I emptied the bottle 4 times before returning to normal skimming.

I would have just unplugged the skimmer for a while

you should of just readjusted the skimmer till it settled down. either lower the riser tube or open the gate valve if your skimmer has either one of those.

I don't think I have the ability to do either of those things. I believe I have a riser tube but it is encased and I can t get to it and the other term I have never heard of.

I would just have shut the skimmer off. Various things can and will cause the skimmer to go nuts. Between you and me I would rather have done the water change over watching idol
