Banghi Cardinal
Despite what I remember from years ago in this hobby, a fairly reputable LFS told me banghi cardinals are now tank raised and are resonably hardy. I have had them die in the past because the dont eat, but he assured me this fish was tank raised and would thrive on mysis shrimp. Well, I got him home and of course he is very picky and only ate one or two of the frozen mysis i put in. I bought him live brine shrimp and man does he go crazy for it....i guess my question is do these fish need to eat live, and if so what is the best method for raising these brine shrimp becuase buying them is an impossibility to do all of the time. I saw on marine depot a live brine hatchery that you set up right on your display tank.....will this work??? any suggestions would be great!!
Thanks so much Vinny |

I'd keep trying with the mysis, to wean him on to frozen.
You can try feeding the mysis at the same time as the live brine shrimp, to help him associate mysis as "food." My banggais are picky, and won't eat any pellet foods. They'll eat freeze-dried mysis if forced (if I'm out of town and using the automatic feeder). They do love frozen mysis, and the occasional frozen bloodworm.

I'm not sure about Banggai Cardinals, but I have a couple of Pajamma Cardinals that were recently added and they are good eaters. They prefer frozen food.

to raise brine shrimp... salinity 1.014, 24 light, 80 F, small airstone, add cysts and start feeding very small amount of wheat flour starting second day after hatching... works well for me, i do it in 4 18 gallon rubbermaid containers... i feed to my broodstock and my tanks in family room. You can always add selco 12 hours prior to feeding to fish to add nutrition. Just my $.02 Bunker

You should switch the food up on him. Mix different foods together. The bangai I had ate everything I put in my tank.

Mine eat any "meaty" foods.
Mostly Brine shrimp and "emerald entree"- both are frozen cubes from the same manufacturer. We let them thaw before putting into the tank. Mine will not eat flake, pellets or any veggies. |
