orange sponge
My wonderful husband brought me home an orange sponge. I am excited and want to put it in my tank. My question is-Do harlequin or brittle stars eat them, what is the lighting requirement and am I able to use Loctite glue to mount on a rock? Thanks for all your help!

I'm pretty sure all sponges are non-photosynthetic. I don't know if brittle stars eat sponges, but I would doubt it.

would lighting affect them or do they need to be in a dark area of the tank?

I do not think it will matter. I would think a place with high current would be good.
"Sponges are very effective filter feeders, since they are able to capture and eat particles as small as bacteria as well as much larger particles. " Just an insert i pulled from the web, could not find anything about light requirements at all. I do have some orange encresting sponge growing in my FOWLR tank and they are not in the light. |

Definitely needs flow. They are nonphoto so light is not an issue but they should not have a lot of light as they could get algae on the surface. Just avoid any exposure to air as this will trap air in the sponge and kill it.

Can I use Loctite on the sponge to put on a rock because they are not attached to anything and if so how do I do it without exposing it to air?

I would just put it in the main tank now. Make sure it never touches air, it it already has...more than likely a gonner. No superglue...just stick it in a spot where it wont get blown around, it will attach before too long.

agreed. Just place it somewhere. It needs flow to eat but attaching it can be tricky. Tree sponges usually have a piece of substrate and that can be attached but ball sponges and some of teh otehrs will just come as a big piece of sponge and can be tricky to attach.
