needlewheel vs recirc?

Can someone please concisely explain the difference between a needlewheel skimer and a recirculating skimmer?

Sure

I guess you are talking about single pass NW skimmer vs recirc NW skimmers. Most of the time they are refer to as in-sump NW vs external NW but that is kinda misleading. Because some recirc NW skimmer can be run insump also. For example I run my recirc nw [DAS ex-2] in sump.

With all things equal a recirc skimmer will out perform an insump skimmer. Plus the recirc has some other benefits:
-Changes in the sump's water level doesn't effect performance.
-You can plumb the overflow to feed the skimmer. So you get the "dirtiest" water.
- You can change the rate you skim without hurting performance.
- You can control the dwell time and it is always greater than the same type insump.
-*can be place external or in-sump

The only bad things about recirc is that they are mostly taller than the same type insump. Also there is a wider selection of insump and recirc usually cost more.

That is a basic run down.
