It's eventually cheaper to just buy a RO unit since you'll be producing a lot of water over the lifetime of your tank.
You can also usually buy it from your LFS. Wal-Mart also sells it. |

You dont set up a RO/DI unit in a sump.....You use the RO/DI unit to make water for water changes & top off water...... Its very easy to set one up....Here is a picture of my new Filter Guys REEF +1 RO/DI unit

Yes using an reverse osmosis de-ionization unit ,the DI is because both silica and phosphate can be ionicly bonded to H2O and that is how it is removed

i agree with Flipper62
I use a drum that is filled by the R/O unit then use a float switch in the sump to turn on and off a dosing pump for top off.. the dosing pump uses the same size hose as the R/O The cost of the R/O is decided by the Gal per day it can make most units are a few hundred dollars but in the long run it pays for its self in the cost for buying pre-made water can be very costly over time..

How does it work?
I realize that you just wanted the "how to use it" stuff, but I explain in detail how it does what it does here, in addition to user tips: Reverse Osmosis/Deionization Systems to Purify Tap Water for Reef Aquaria http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2005-05/rhf/index.htm
