My PBT was the same way for about a week after I added him to the display.

Now he realizes the majority of the time I walk up to the tank he's about to get something good, so he's much bolder

What other fish are in the tank? Firefish are easily intimidated.

I had some fish I rarely saw for the first few months. It just took them a while to figure out I was the "food lady." I also noticed that once there were corals in the tank for them to hang around in they seemed more comfortable in the tank.

Give him time he'll come around. Get him another firefish friend and he'll probably come out more frequently and quickly. But they will soon realize that you are the source of the food.

My Radiant wrasse acted the same way. Now he is the first up to the glass when I walk up to the tank.

This happened to me as well with all my fish back when I used a auto feeder.

I then started to feed by hand, and now when anyone walks into the room the fish swim right up to you too see if there going to get feed.

I now only use a auto feeder when I go on Vac...

Yeah, I havent seen my engineer goby since I got him a week ago except for a quick glance here and there.
I hope he warms up to the tank and comes out soon.

My lawnmower took about 5 days before you could even see him, he was hiding really well. Then he spent another 5 days only hanging around his cave. Now he goes everywhere.

Two firefish in a 26 g tank will likely fight.
