Plenum Method of Nitrate Reduction

I am setting up a red sea max and transfering from my 100 gallon. I read when I first started this hobby about a plenum system that involves creating an anoxic state under the sand using and eggcrate and some screen. I read that it can dramatically reduce nitrates but can be deadly if setup wrong. After reading more and gaining some experience I feel I could set it up right to be effective. My question is how effective is it really. Does anyone here use it. Any advice or tips would be appreciated.

A deep sand bed should be just as effective without a possible crash.

IMO plenum systems are too unstable of a set up. I would just stick to 10% water changes with RO/DI water weekly.

I would only use a plenum if I exausted all other methods first.
Even then It would be in a fuge or a remote DSB.
