You can feed it small pieces of silversides, shrimp, scallops, mussels etc. Just try to keep the fish away while feeding or they will steal its food. Takes a couple minutes for it to eat a piece. Usually best to feed the fish first.

I would feed it baby brine shrimp, cyclopeeze, and mysis. They're zooplanktivores and these are some of the most natural foods for them.

I used to feed my bta once or twice a week with silverside. Now that it has split into 7 over the last couple of years, I feed them once a month.

Agreed, I used to feed mine 2-3 times a week. I stopped direct feeding it about 6 months ago and haven't noticed any changes to it's size or health.

Well, I agree that light is main source of energy, and they can go w/out spot feed, but I do notice better color from mine after feeding.
Nems can be difficult in a brand new tank, really should be established.

I was so suprised today, one of my clowns actually swam into my BTA for a few minutes. I feed it my homemade mix I have frozen. Thaw out a chunk and watch him go. The shrimp like to cheat death and try to get it away from him.

Actually when I fed food to my Clarki she would always grab the first piece and drop into the Nem then come back to feed. Now she is a big pig lol and will steal it.

Well the many year old thing is to feed alot for several weeks and do a major water change. Not large pieces. And they will split...
I never wanted mine to split cause my Clown is too big as it is. So I didn't try it. Last edited by stagefright13; 07/22/2008 at 11:55 PM. |

I don't think large pieces of food or using fish as opposed to plankton would really be a stressor. All other things being equal I would expect to see less splitting with larger foods than smaller since the animal can't utilize them as efficiently (so not really a stress, but less energetic benefit). I doubt that there's an obvious correlation either way, but it's not something that's been studied. Splitting in BTAs is a big mystery. Some populations don't even split at all and we don't know why.
