It damages the ability of cells to respirate. Severely damaged cells must find other energy sources.. chiefly their neighboring, still healthy cells. Ozone also makes cells more vulnerable to damage by free radicals.

Long story short- It makes your head hurt BAD with little exposure to a room filled with the smell.(My dumb brother wanted to test it on his 10 gallon!! )

why is ozone bad to inhale?

Because it can damage mucus membranes.

Carbon can be used to remove O3 to keep it out of the house.

ozone is a free radical that will oxidize any organics it encounters, including you.

+1... Ozone is not a stable molecule... it will cause oxidative damage and free radical propegation reactions. Our DNA has enough to worry about, donchathink?

Hey Rick, how's things?

The professor watched the overflowing cup until he could no longer restrain himself. “It’s overfull! No more will go in!” the professor blurted. “You are like this cup,” the master replied, “How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup.”

Ozone is quite harmful to humans, but if used properly, it's safe and can kill various bacteria and keep your tank water clear. For my 250g system, I run 100mg/hr of ozone thru my skimmer (Shuran, ozone safe). I pass the outlet water thru carbon, and also pass the outlet air thru carbon. There is no residual small in my house.

You should thoroughly read thru the 3 reefkeeping articles on ozone before making a decision.

http://reefkeeping.com/issues/2006-05/rhf/index.php

Also chk out American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology's website for info on the effect of ozone on humans.
http://www.aaaai.org/patients/senior...thma/ozone.stm
A few exerpts from the site:

Even short-term exposure to ozone can increase bronchial allergen responsiveness in both seniors and children with mild allergic asthma. Ozone exposures have been associated with poorly controlled asthma in elderly adults.

Ozone is a secondary pollutant, which is formed by the interaction of oxides of nitrogen, volatile organic compounds with ultraviolet light. The main sources of these oxides are automobiles and petroleum-driven engines.

Studies performed in both animals and humans have shown that many pollutants can cause airway inflammation. There is a link between the upper and lower airway. A recent study on the effect of ozone on the nasal mucosa in nasal biopsies taken 6h after exposure to either 400 ppb ozone demonstrated that that ozone significantly increases the number of neutrophils in the epithelium, the expression of NF-kB , TNF-a IL-1b, IL-8 IL-6, GM-CSF and ICAM-1 in the nasal epithelial cells, suggesting that ozone-induced inflammation of the nasal mucosa may be a consequence of increased synthesis and release of epithelial cell-derived cytokines and adhesion molecules which influence the activity of inflammatory cells.

Hey, anyone know what O3 concentration can be detected by the human nose?

At what point does it become harmful? What I'm getting at is , is O3 harmful before there is enough in the air to smell?

Nope, not done yet! Fla to Cali now in NY. I'll be here for 5 years, but of course will visit Florida since that's where the family is.

I almost got SCUBA cert'd, but lacked a couple of things in the end due to a dive that my ears wouldn't cooperate on I would like to find someone in Florida who can get me cert'd on the cheap since I'm almost done. ... but that'll have to wait until X-mas break.

Glad to hear you're staying wet! I miss the beach, Rick, I really do!
