ehiem 1260 vs ocean runner 2500
For a return pump on my new 120 it will have 6 ft of head pressure. And I plan on running it external. I like the low watts on the ocean runner. And I have had good luck with ehiem in the past.
thanks Last edited by prodman; 08/11/2008 at 10:30 PM. |

ppl happy with both pump , i am intresting to know why you want to use small return pump , i know you keep a lot of SPS in your old system and IMO more water movement to your sump will keep the tank more clean . i run on my 120 1800GPH and it was upgrade from 1200GPH i am thinking now to upgrade to laguna 2400 gph with 100 watt use . i also cut because of that 3 SEIO 2600 and use today only 2 vortec .

I was under the impression that less turnover through the sump was better. I plan on using tunzes in the tank

a lot of ppl said that but IMO more water will let your skimmer and filter keep the tank more clean , more then that with bigger pump you can use with your return to feed more equipment in the system and bottom line to save more money on the electric bill . you can feed the calc reactor , the uv , the carbon reactor & etc.. in my sump there is only 2 pump (normal when i don't test other skimmers) the return pump and the skimmer pump all run through the return pump .

Youll be good with a small pump, it wont keep the tank more clean by pushing more through. I have the OR2500 on my 75, it also feeds my skimmer so im pumping about 300 gph through the overflow at the most.

here is why : i have 17 fish in my tank bare bottom (most big) i feed 2 time a day very heavy i have few pump i test the small pump for 2 week (the reason was to reduce total watt use) everything in the system run the same but the detritus in the tank corner was twice.... the filter sock was less dirty , and skimming result was less to , so IMO it's keep the system more clean and more detritus move through the over flow to the sump . |

I dont see how it can be more clean, mine barebottom too, 4500gph of flow. Just 300 gph on the return pump. No detritus settles on the bottom and its clean as can be. As long as you keep it suspended it will get to the sump. I dont even use a filter sock.

I wouldn't get a large return either.. My 190 only has a Eheim 1260 on it.. IMO thats plenty.. You only need enough to feed your skimmer.. Most skimmers are only pulling a few hundred GPH so no reason to pump 1200GPH through your sump. Plus the more water you move through your oveflow the more you increase the odds of any kind of blockage putting water on the floor.
I like Eheims my self. I've got about 5 of them. On everything from my Returns to my H&S skimmer to my DIY Ca Reactors. The ocean runners seem to be good pumps also. You would probably be happy either way.. Eheims do seem to be bullet proof though. The fact that they are pretty much the standard for Ca reactors says alot to me..

I use Eheim on my GEO reactor, I would say the pumps are both well made, and I would use either one.

![]() 8BALL_99 : eheim 1260 will be better choice then the 1250 imo but again everyone with is experience on his system , i know that ppl use 1260 on 240 gallon to and happy but i preffer more water movement . |

For a 120 I would step up to the OR 3500 or Eheim 1262. I am an OR fan myself and now have 4 of them in my systems. My return on my 100G is an OR 3500 through a 1/4 HP chiller and into 2x3/4" Loc Lines and I would not want any less flow.

Its a 3x3 cube and it will have sand I like flow but I dont want to stir the sand. Can the OR3500 be run external?

Yes they can be run external, I use another one for my closed loop and its external.
My 100G has 330 pounds of sugar sized southdown sand in it and it does not blow around. I also have 2 Koralia #4s and a the OR 3500 closed loop through a Oceans Motions Squirt two way so circulation is tremendous still with no blowing sand once the bacteria gets established. |

Ok so maybe I will get the 3500. But that would push around 700 gph factoring in 6ft of head pressure. And That was a bit more than I was thinking I should run through the sump. I plan on running a fuge in line with my sump as well.

Ofcourse the more you feed of your return the more head your pump will have so the less flow you will get.. My 1260 only has 5 foot of head.. Has 1" plumbing straight into my tank.. If it fed other stuff I'd proably use a larger pump since I'd get less flow.
Just know running it external won't help with heat at all. If thats why your wanting to try it dont bother. The water will still heat up the same.

I tested it a while back. I've seen other threads where people have tested it also.. I posted a test I did with a Mag somewhere.. I'll see if I can find it for you.

Eheims and Ocean Runners both produce about the same amount of heat either internal or external. Both have water jackets inside the motors and use tank water to cool them. I would say if you have room in the sump run it internal as it will be quieter although both are very quiet external too.
