Freshwater Dip ?
I am a getting a couple new fish, some tangs and anthias. Do I do a freshwater dip to kill parasites in RO/DI water and also for how long?

setup a QT and keep an eye on them for 4-6 weeks. no need to treat them if there are no problems.

Many people like to do dips before adding to the main tank or for that matter the QT. The VERY important thing though is to make SURE the pH and temp of the fresh water matches, as close as possible, ESP. the pH, the water the fish is in. Most people recommend no longer than 3 mins but I've personally done longer and I have a wholesaler that will do up to 15 mins!! Some fish fare very poorly though such as Royal Grammas. Take the fish out if it starts do act "different" laying flat-unless a trigger or hippo tang, or trying to jump out.
Good luck!

To add what has been said, do NOT use RO/DI water--it is demineralized and lacks oxygen/has high CO2 content, unless you've aerated it for a good 12 hours. The best thing is to use pH adjusted (1/4 tsp baking soda per gallon--this will get you to a pH of about 8, which is fine) dechlorinated tap water. Aerate the dip while you do it. I always dip every fish. Most of the time, I also add formalin to the dip unless my research reveals that the fish won't tolerate the formalin (e.g., mandarins). Every fish should tolerate a 7-10 minute dip, provided the temp is the same as the tank water and pH is around 8.0.
Dips are not a replacement to quarantine, and you should quarantine every new fish, with a few exceptions (your fish aren't the exceptions). |

PH and temp ok.
Do I acclimate to quarratine water in tank first, freshwater dip, and then tank? Here is what is coming for my 180. They will be quarrantined in a 75 for a couple weeks. The shrimp and clams will go into the display tank without freshwater dip, No need to quarrantine to correct? This is what I do when I add jumpers, as my QT is not covered. Other fish go into QT as Sam suggested, and medication/dips/etc... are not used unless deemed necessary. |

So don't dip unless necessary after quarrantine.
