new tank, needed room, got a deal, woo hoo!! here we go again

I was having some issues with over crowding(due to growth), checked on craigslist....problem solved. Picked up a 75gal AGA with matching wooden stand for $40.00!!!! I never get deals like this, then I find two t5light fixtures(216watt) brand new for $100 ea. I should have bought a lottery ticket. I do have a question though, I have never had t5's is 432watts of t5 lighting overkill for a 75gal LPS tank?

Not in my opinion. That puts you at about 6 watts per gallon.

watts per gallon is not at all telling. depending on what you keep, one of the fixtures could be plenty. What I think would be even more of an issue is, logistically, putting all 8 bulbs over the tank. But, it depends lights have in them... if they don't have individual reflectors you may need both in order to keep things alive in your tank. And based on that price, I'd think they do not have the individual reflectors, and I'd probably pass on them because of it if you want to keep corals in the tank.

I have four 54 watt t5s over my 90, and have no problem keeping shrooms, zoas, polyps, and rics. With all eight you could keep almost anything.

we have a LFS that runs T5'S only. And they have beautiful display tanks. I used to run VHO's only with no reflectors and did just fine as well. Just my experience.

They have individually shaped reflectors, these were units purchased by an individual who did not use them, said he paid over $200.00 each

That should be a good solution, but most individual reflectors run in the 2.5-3" wide range. So four of them would be at least 10", plus a couple for the housing, probably from 12-14" wide. How wide is the 75? I'd think not wide enough for both fixtures, but maybe my math is wrong somewhere.

Tank is 18.5, either way he said they fit on a 90gal. I'll know more when I go there on Monday.

the smallest individual reflectors ive come across are 2 inchs ( hellolights brand ) the largest ive seen is 3

so either way your looking between 16inchs and 24 inchs of reflectors. my guess is they each have a single reflector ( for each set of 4 ) but still you should be able to keep a wide range of corals and fish under those lights
