Can I use a canister filter as a diatom filter

I have an Ocean Clear canister filter that uses a 25 micron filter that I can also put a bag full of charcoal in the middle of it.

I want to use it as a diatom filter. Can I do this? Can I fill a filter bag with diatom powder and drop it in place of the charcoal bag?

Thanks

No, but---they make a 1-micron filter cartridge, which would do what a diatom filter does.

What you could do is temporarily put this in line instead of the cannister, if your pump is able to drive it: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...fm?pcatid=4501
Essentially you'd get the 1/micron filter and the clear unit, and just plumb it on into the system, but take the filter out when not actively trying to polish water.

Alternatively, a diatom filter: http://www.aquariumguys.com/aquarium...m-filters.html

They run with their own pump, line, sit outside your tank and polish the water, It's not just a bag: you load jar with white gunk which sucks up to the filter bag surface and renders it a filter. A really tight filter. They're neat. Not too expensive. Given the choice, I'd rather a real diatom filter.
