Heater question

Ok, so I have an old Marineland visitherm stealth heater that I want to replace, but I'm not exactly sure which heater to go with, since I've owned this heater for the three years I've been in reef keeping.

I believe (although it has been so long, I might have forgotten) it's a 250 watt that I'm using on my 90 gallon. However, since I live in Georgia, I was thinking I could go with a 200 or even a 150 watt.

So basically, my questions are:

Any suggestions in terms of good heater models or brands I should be aware of?

Also, just curious as to what other people in similar warm climates are doing with their heaters in similar sized tanks.

Thanks so much,
David

You will get lots of different opinions here. My personal favorite is the Eheim Jager heater because:

(1) Unlike the Stealth, it has an LED to let you know that it is ON or OFF.
(2) It can be calibrated should its thermostat drift. The calibration instructions can be found at: http://www.boroniaaquarium.com.au/ne...514e6d836edb6f.

If you can't afford a temperature controller, you can buy two small 100-watt Jager heaters (or 2 x 75-watt?) so a failure of one heater (stuck ON or stuck OFF) will not be catastrophic. You can keep them calibrated with a glass thermometer and check their LEDs to see how well they are synchronized.

If you decide to purchase a temperature controller later, you can connect both of your heaters to the controller. Just set your heaters a few degrees higher than the set point of your controller.
