Depends on what your keeping. If you have a high bio load then skimmer. If you have sps, then everything

Seriously depends on your stocking plan but I would say skimmer, lights and flow in that order for most tanks.

The patience to throw away bad LFS advice, the humility to accept the good, and the wisdom to know the difference.

(nope, never been to AA but that saying has a nice ring to it)

It isn't the price that determines the quality of equipment, but it is a good indicator. If you're on a budget, buy your stuff used. Having everything of quality is important!

all of the above suggestions are good. I would like to add TIME. time working on the tank, time researching equipment, time learning about the stock, and most of all taking your time and going slow.

also he who buys cheap, buys twice.

WATER ....if your source water stinks get a real good r/o Di at the very least...
I use 2 kold steril units followed by an r/o DI followed by 2 commercial DI's which produce triple distilled water quality....

GFCI, all those other items are good for your pets health, but what about yours?

2nd, RO/DI

3rd, Refractometer

All the rest all depend on what you want to keep.

Depends on your source water and how efficient your RO works. There are plenty of folks who use no filters at all. If you are on municipal water, get the annual quality report and see what is in the tap. If you are on a well, have a sample tested. You can make good decisions only when properly informed.

I say knowledge is the most important thing to have. This includes the wisdom to be patient, too.

I think that your overall filtration setup is the most important. It's important to have that sweet natural filtration with a little assistance from man on top of that.
