Are TalkingReef, ReefCast and ReefBuilder podcasts on iTunes reputable??
I am a newbie just looking into starting up a reef tank and found a couple of podcasts (some video) that help visually explain what the road ahead will look like. I'm looking for opinions on if these people provide good advise. Any comments are greatly appreciated!

its hard to say, there are many methods roads to get to the finish line, none are exactly shorter than others, all have strengths and weaknesses.
my advice would be to understand the big picture of what you are trying to accomplish and then do what is neccessary to get the result. there are some tenants that i believe in but they are few in number. 1. no such thing as too much live rock (up to the point that there is no space for fish or corals to grow.) 2. no such thing as overskimming. there is underskimming but that is a whole other subject. 3. simple is usually better than complex. 4. just because you have 400 watt bulbs doesnt mean you are getting 400 watts worth of light. 5. bigger tanks are always better but not neccessarily nicer.

I've listened to some reefcast (I'm pretty sure thats what it was) Very interesting, good info, but definately do research in other places as well, and if you don't understand something just post on here.

Thanks for the replies!!
I've been reading for the past 3-4 weeks and there is a TON of information. Unfortunately a lot of contradiction also. I'm trying to follow murphysfish's logic. Before I make any costly investment, I'm trying to look at the big picture so I can figure out what kind of display I truly want. That's one of the reasons I like these podcasts. You can listen/watch them on your way to work.... I've gained 2 more hours of research a day! However, if these guys are not speaking from fact, I will be doing a disservice to myself. Thus the question.....Thanks Again! |

Thats a big part of this hobby, conflicting information. Try to talk to two of the workers in my lfs and they'll get into an argument about what the best thing to do is.
There are several guys on here, I think they are all moderators actually (not to say that you don't know what you're talking about if your not a moderator!), who when they chime in, I trust them above anyone else. All you can really do is use your best judgement.

How would I know what you are listening to? If you heard me, it was either in person or through your speakers, I'd hazard a guess.
