Which Clownfish to Buy?
So in the last 6 months, both of my False Perculas decided to go carpet surfing, so now I am in the market for another pair.
I would like to try a pair of something other than false percs, so what would you guys recommend? Looking for colorful and entertaining, and interest in hosting either of my anemones (condy and I think a long tentacle). Thanks! Last edited by Stray32; 10/27/2008 at 01:33 PM. |

My favorite clowns are GSM. they are some of the toughest to pair up however. I have never had one host in anything other than a carpet or RBTA. certainly doesnt mean they wont though.

It really depends on what you're looking for. False Percs tend to be some of the hardiest and most well behaved. I love my maroon, but she can be a pain (and she's better behaved than most). Condylactis (sp?) anemones are not natural hosts to any clownfish. Here's a good reference for Anemones and their host clownfish: http://saltaquarium.about.com/librar...lownschart.htm. Of course, there are no guarantees, so no matter what pair you have, the clownfish may never go to the anemone. Or maybe it will, even if it's not a natural host.
I'm not sure whether your LTA is H. crispa or M. doreensis. If it's H. crispa, I rather like Cinnamon clowns, though they can be quite aggressive. If you want something more docile, I'd suggest a Skunk clownfish. I have a Pink Skunk who's very well behaved, though quite shy.

For hosting clowns, I like the clarkii myself. My clarkii has hosted many types of anemone's over the years. I had a condy in there for a while that he loved which I thought was odd because as IsnalndCrow mentioned, they aren't natural hosts in the wild. I just put in a new RBTA and within 24 hrs he's already hosting it. My Black and White osc. on the other hand, won't go near one. (I have 2 RBTA's)
The clarkii although really common does have a pretty interesting personality. (at least mine does) Not the brightest colored clowns out there by any means, but they host pretty much anything which makes them more fun to watch IMO. |

I like the Maroon Clowns. I have a pair of them and they are great in my tank. They play and sleep with my chromis and I havent had any problems with them at all. They have liked every fish I put in with them so far. I am going to be getting an anthias soon and they should be fine with him too. From what I have learned in all the studying that I have done they are the hardiest clown out there. I know everyone says the Clarkii or Ocelaris are great but my maroons have great personalities. The male with actually play between my fingers when I am feeding them. He wont eat till the other 2 are done and then go around scoopin up all the left overs lol. My kind of man hes polite to the ladies lol. They will host almost anything also. You could put one of those foam balls in there and they will host it. I have heard of them hosting everything from a powerhead to a BTA. The maroons are not shy at all. They will come out whether the lights are on or not lol. They like attention and are camera hogs also lol. Good luck on choosing a clown for yuo. Everyones gonna have their own opinions just remember your the one thats gotta live with them.
