algae?? using rodi water??
cut the light time back.
use rodi water.

temp swings:
using heater??
using fans??
if using heater to keep water warm, and using fans to keep water cool.. then you shouldn't have a problem.
what's your temp problem?? is your tank getting too hot?? or too cold??

In the past, when setting up a new tank I've kept the lights off for the first couple of weeks to help prevent an early bloom. What kind of lights are you running. Agree with above post..monitor your lighting regimen and if you don't have any livestock in there, shut the lights down and keep the tank running for a couple of weeks. Obviously, you need to make sure that your parameters are in check. Just my opinion. With the little that I know about your setup.

Good luck.

Is the algae powder-like? If so it's the diatom stage and will go away.
