60g tank setup wich pump to use?

I would like to use a blueline 20-30 pump with a 3/4 SWCD on the return pump. Can I throttle the pump down if it's to much flow? Would A blueline 30-hd-x rated at 1,100gph be to much?

Yes you can throttle the pump back some if it's too much flow (just make sure to put the valve on the outlet and not the input). If the Blueline 30 HD is too much just throttle it back a little. How much return pump your tank can handle is really based on how big your overflow line is.

Ya, I will only have one drain line but I can make it as big 1-1/2". I'm looking at the Ocean Motion now. I think it would be a better unit in the long run.

Thanks for the help.

From what I have read the OM would be a better choice than the SWCD. Just make sure there's no way any debris can get into it.

If you need to throttle it back, just tee the return line back to the sump and put a ball valve on the section going back. This way, you can reduce the flow in the DT to something appropriate (if needed), but you do not put any additional strain on the pump.

I think the diverted excess flow back to the sump is a nice option, although if you throttle back the pump it will give you energy savings. You should check out the pumps performance curve to find out. The newer drums on the Oceansmotion now allow for some small grains of sand to pass, so it is better than before. You should look at the RC calculators to find out the flow max for your overflow/plumbing.
