Looking nice already seeing results after your 5th day or dosing?

What's the vodka supposed to do, how much do you add, and what kind of vodka does one use?

Vodka is a carbon source which will make bacteria grow in the tank to help fight high nitrates and phosphates in older established tanks. There are several threads about this stuff I even have one now. You can dose it according to your tank volume, but is only recommended for older mature tanks that have had everything done to lower the nitrates and phosphates. Anyone else can chime in. Don't mean to hijack the thread.

According to tank volume, how much does one use and how often?

Sorry about some of the pictures taken. I didn't have time to edit the pictures. The colors on the sps are decent. I always had a decent growth on my sps but as you can see many of my sps are tiny. I had a recent tank crash when I moved my tank from my office to my home. I lost lots of nice and large sps. The 700 gallon system is the upgrade from the old system after the crash.
I hope to accomplish a couple of things by dosing Vodka. I like to see if I can improve the growth rate and the coloration on my sps. The old system did not have the necessary equipments to maintain water quality. I hope to see a markly improvement of my sps with the vodka dosing along with the ASM G-6 skimmer. |

Spleify, thanks. My Setosa seem to be a shade brighter since the dosage. The skimmer is going crazy. It seem like I'm getting 50% more gunk from the skimmer since the dosing. The bubble on the rock seem to be less since the dosage as well. Green algae doesn't build up on the glass as fast. Yesterday, I didn't see any algae build up on the front glass of my display tank at all. Nice!!! I can get use to this.

I've heard of this many time and have read many, many threads on this topic. Almost all of the people I've seen or heard of using this method have had great success, but like others said, it's only to be used on mature systems like a few years old. And to all those who don't know, yes it is using the Vodka that you drink. Sounds crazy eh? Look at the results for your self.

Of course, everything is all peachy at the moment. Not a major problem but did notice a couple of tiny burned tip on some of my Digitata. It could be some brown diatom floating around and got stuck. I'm addressing the issue. My alkalinity was reading close to 11 before starting the dosage. I know I may have some burn tip going into the treatment. This is not too surprising if this is the case. I'm going to try to lower the alk.

I think it's recommended to lower alk to 7 when dosing vodka as running it higher will give burnt tips.

Pito, you are correct. The alk needs to be around 7-8 during the treatment. I know I may have some burn tip going into the treatment. I want to see if the burn occures first before I attempt to lower my alk. I don't want to do anything that isn't necessary. Plus I like the alk staying around 10. It helps keeping my ph steady. The burn isn't bad or a real concern at the moment. I'll lower the alk to around 9 and see what happens from there. I'll lower more if needs be.
