So how many clams in a clam only tank?

Hello hello guys,

Well, I am an avid clam keeper. I have a 35 gallon system thats well established. I have two deresa clams and one crocea. They are all between 5.5 and 4 inches long. I have been keeping clams for close to 6 months (I think) and was curious on what people thought about how much of a bioload clams put on a system?

Do you think they strip the water column pretty quickly?

Do you think an addition of another clam to my system would be too much?

Thanks,

Jim

System stats-
150W MH w/ 2x 65Watt PC actinic
35gallon Total water volume
30 lbs of live rock
Corals - Mixed - Mainly sps
No fish - only 1 cleaner shrimp + nass. snails

Calcium - 520
KH - 8.5
nitrates - 0
SG - 1.026
Salt - Oceanic
Dosing - None
Flow - koralia 2 + random 300gph powerhead
Weekly water changes of 5 gallons

You could probably add another clam to the tank. It would help if you got a fish or two in the tank to produce some waste for the clams.

i have one 10" squamosa and a now 8" derasa that has a huge impact on the calcium in my 40 breeder. I have to dose 1/3 of a dixie cup just of the calcium daily. get a calcium reactor for sure!

I love the scientific name of your avatar. I miss my puffer like that. I'm gonna get a tattoo of mine on my bicep as a part of my coral reef sleeve.

I'd definitely be prepared to dose both calcium and alkalinity daily (either with additives or through a reactor some how), but otherwise you can put as many clams as will fit in the tank.

Go to the clam forum on here and check out the pics, there's a picture of one guy's zero edge aquarium filled with clams to the point that they're all almost rubbing elbows.

How do you have a 520 Ca and a 8.5 dKH with no dosing in a tank with three clams over 4" and SPS?
