Fire Hazard?
I have lighting, 2 powerheads, 1 pump, a heater and a canister filter (plus eventually a skimmer) all hooked up to one outlet (via a power strip of course) and the other outlet on that line powers two computers and two printers. Is this a fire hazard?
I really want the school to make the outlet GFCI, but if they don't will a GFCI powerstrip do the trick? Should I press them to upgrade the wiring? The school was built in 1964. Last edited by gwenvet; 11/19/2008 at 09:09 AM. |

Watts divided by volts equals amps, or amps x volts equals watts. So 1000 watts divided by 120v = 8.3 amps. You probably have a 15 amp circuit which is normal and you do not want to exceed about 75-80% of that 15 amps or say 12 amps total.

The issue is to be safe. The electrical circuit is (should) be protected by a correctly sized circuit breaker for the wire size. If the amperage draw is exceeded the breaker will trip and the circuit will be dead. If you want to add a skimmer you will be adding the additional power requirement of a pump, so you will need to account for that. AS far as the GCFI tricity & water are not a good combo (kinda like gas & a match) I would deffinitly get a GFCI power strip ASAP.

Has anyone seen the "fire prevention" power strips? I couldn't find anything that said they were just GFCI's built in, or if there was some other method in which they work.
