cleaning tank
When I do a water change I scrub the hair algae and "turkey baste" lightly the sand and the rocks to get debris/detrius back into the water column. I do not currently use a skimmer for my 29 gallon (broke) and only run carbon in 12 gallon aquapod. I notice that there is still some debris floating around the tank that I can't get all of it during water changes. I was thinking of running a HOB filter with just some filter floss when I do tank maintenence and let it run for a day to catch the remaining debris and then remove it and clean it out for the next time so nitrates don't skyrocket. Any other helpful ideas or does this sound pretty good?

Well that will work for now, but I would invest in getting a new PS if you can. The HOB filter will do a good job for that day but you want the benefit of 24/7 filtering from a protein skimmer.
