Coraline Dying....

Could low Mag kill off my coraline, its the only test kit I dont have. Allmost bought a red sea test kit but I've read here that it was a waste of money.

Typically the only lighting that "kills off" or "bleaches" coraline are Metal Halides that are bearing down driectly on coraline that is used to lower light. Typically lower light (including light that is older and needs to be changed, of course barring MHs) coraline with thrive in as long as conditions are right, i.e. Optimum calc, alk, and mag levels = good. In the past for example in starting up a new tank I would have just actinics running for the lighting after the cycle and I would start treating the tank as if corals were already in it, that is keeping the parameters on par, and assuring that the light is not causing an algea outbreak, other than coraline. By the time I started putting coral in the tank I had several different types of coraline in the tank, not only colors but shapes. Of course as you turn on the "regular lights" some of the coraline will shift in shape\size and even change colors, all this due to the type of different lighting that it now getting with a full spectrum as opposed to just actinic.

HTH, Matt

EDIT for clarification.

Are those DE bulbs?

If so, that is the reason behind this, really nothing else. Surprised you didn't notice more issues.

DE = double ended.

They look like this, and always need to have the UV shield in place,
