Bulkheads slurping sound!!!

Whats the secret to keeping the slurping sound to a minimum on a drilled tank with bulkhead overflow????

Most of the time the problem is that people try to run too much volume thru the sump. They get it in their head that because the drain will possibly drain 600 - 800 gph that they need to put 600 - 800 gph thru it and that simply isn't the case. The noise usually comes from air trying to escape. 9 times out of 10 the slurping sound that your referring to is solved by installing a ball valve between the return pump and the DT. You will slightly close the ball valve to restrict flow a little and problem solved.
Another potential issue is the stand pipe design. It's best to have a controllable air vent on top of the standpipe. What I've found is that too much or too little air flow thru the standpipe vent can cause drain noise. A little adjustable air valve like the ones on the Protein Skimmer air intake lines are perfect for the standpipe air vent.

A standpipe. There are short versions of the Stockman and others.
