Freshwater fish question

Hey there
I know it's a saltwater section but I had a question I believe reefers would probably know.
So, here goes.

I'm setting up a little fish lake in my garden and I'd like to know what types of fish would be ok with temperature changes, since I'm not making any heating or chilling devices.
I live in Israel which is has the same type of climate as California so no snow but it does get really warm in summer and "summers" are long.

So, what fish would you recommend?

Granted, I live in Wisconsin, so this might not really apply...but my mom has a 90 gallon "pond" in one of her gardens. She has four fancy goldfish that have been in there for about 5 years. The summers are much shorter, but there have been a few days that it's gotten up to 100+ degrees F, and of course it gets down to -20 degrees F some winters.

Goldfish seem rather boring and plain, but once they get bigger they're a lot more interesting. They're probably pushing 5 or 6 inches long these days and they're all fat and happy.

Sorry it wasn't more specific to your climate, but thought I'd share my thoughts anyway.

For what it's worth, I put some paradise gouramis in my goldfish pond here in North Mississippi and they proved to be a problem in that they multiplied rapidly and ate all the young goldfish. I hoped winter and cold temperatures would kill the gouramis but no luck. They looked kind of beat up in spring, but as soon as the water warmed they were back to breeding. I took hundreds of them to my LFS. I finally drained the pond to get rid of them.

alright, thanks everybody.

By the way, do river lobsters breath under water or they need a ramp or something, to help them out of the pond once in a while?
