Halogen Quartz Iodide... basically the main difference that I know of is HQI is typically (maybe always) double ended and MH tend(again, i believe always) to be screw in single ended.

Thats how I understand it but I'm a T5HO man myself so my knowledge is limited

The rest was a good answer, but this part should be Hydrargyrum Quartz Iodide... which is a variety of Metal Halide lamp.

Halogens (Quartz Halogen) are actually a variety of incandescent lamp.

HQI lamps can come in both single-ended (SE) screw-in type (medium, mogul) lamps and double-ended (DE) push-in lamps.

HQI lamps require a ballast made to run them.
Not all Metal Halide ballasts will run an HQI lamp.

One of the main differences between the SE and DE lamps is the DE lamps have no UV protection and require a UV glass shield while the SE lamps have a UV coating and can be used without a shield.
Of course if you run any metal halide lamp without a shield it can crack or explode if it gets splashed.

Like jenglish said, for the most part, if your lamp is double-ended it's HQI.

To the best of my knowledge one isn't really "better" than the other.
There may be a little price difference when buying all the components for the first time, I believe the DE HQI setup runs a little more, but if you really want to do some reading on MH lamps then you should check out Sanjay's site: http://www.reeflightinginfo.com/

That guy has probably forgotten more about lighting than I'll ever know.

HQI light runs brighter and hotter then normal MH. Eballast is most effcient but if you need more light then 250W eballast or a 400W eballast can produce then use HQI. I have 250W HQI b/c I wanted less watts then eballast 400W but brighter then 250Watts.
