sand sifter?

The other day I bought an Engineer Goby and was told that it would sift my sand. Is this correct? I looked them up on internet and didn't see anything bout sand sifting, it is eating whn the other fish are fed.
Thanks.

I do not believe that engineer gobies sift sand. Here is a link to some sand sifting gobies.

You could try a shrimp and goby pair. I have a yellow watchman with a tiger pistol and they move the sand all over my tank

Do they do anything beneficial to the tank or just look neat?
Thanks for the help.

if you are looking for something to clean your sand in the way of a fish there are several types of gobies out there that will do a good job. i personally have a golden head sleeper goby wich does a killer job at it. there is also the diamond sleeper goby wich does a great job too.

if you want to go the invert route there are tons of those as well. i personally like cucumbers and have 1 in every take as well as nassarius snails, conchs, cerith snails, clams and a few others. but those are a very good starting point for you.

Engineer Gobies don't sift. They dig. Alot. They can create vast amounts of tunnels under the sand in your tank. They can cause your rock work to tumble. It is always a risk with a sifter being aggressive towards other gobies, but I've never seen it happen. Just make sure your goldhead get enough to eat, they can be hard to feed without a refugium, in my opinion.

i just added a enginer yesterday..... i got a big 1 at the lfs for a steal.... they had dug a nest under the rock in the display tank at the lfs. my son wanted an eel and this was the closest thing i could do with the direction i wanted to go. my question is.. do they get along with shrimp? i read they eat shrimp.. the reason i ask is because i want to get some ,like peppermints. also why are they better in groups? saltwater superstore will only sell one per customer/order. is that just because of supply and demand?

I've just always have seen 2 or 3 poking there head out from under a rock together. Seeing 5 of them together 25 years ago was what got me into saltwater. I'll always make a spot in my tank for them. They doooooooooo diiiiiiiiiggggg! Make sure your rock was stacked onto the bottom and not on top of the sand. Mine will eat out of your hand.

That is so neat. My clown eats out of my hand. I will have to go get another goby now.
THanks so much for all the info.
