Mushroom Fission

I've been keeping a watermelon mushroom in my refugium because the lighting in my display tank is too intense. The mushroom moved slightly and has left a small brownish nub behind. From what I've read, this should become a new mushroom.

Does this give me any opportunity to relocate the parent or child by hand? Or are they both too attached to the rock?

Is there any disadvantage to having shrooms multiplying in my refugium? I've read mushrooms can actually sting other corals. Do they pose any risk to my pods?

How long before the new nub should look like mushroom?

Thanks for any info.

Also, might the child do better under the intense lighting if placed in the display tank at birth, so to speak?

I watched a yuma over the course of about a week stretch out an "arm" and deposit a small spot on the LR which ended up growing to a mini-yuma.

Relocate, sure. I've accidentally ripped mushrooms in half and both halfs grew and where fine.

They wont bother anything IME being in the fuge, whenever I loose a coral (zoa or mushroom) I find it went down the drain to my sump.

My nub took about a week or two to look like a mushroom.

What kind of lighting do you have in your tank? I have mushrooms in my tank under 250W MH.
If you like the look of it, find a semi-shaded spot for it to go. If it doesn't like where it is, it will move on its own, and find a happy spot for itself. The new one will grow and start to look like the bigger one soon enough.
And yes, mushrooms will sting some other corals.

I have a 250w-MH and 2x24w-T5-blue over the display tank. I tried placing it in a shaded area, but all the shaded areas get trafficked by my brittle and emerald, and it didn't like all the attention. It has done much better in the fuge with only a single white 18w-PC 16h/day.

Which is more likely to do better under the MH? The baby or the adult?

Are you planning to make the jump to serious sps or something because thats a ton of lighting for just a shroom and a frogspawn lol.

Honestly if the adult don't like it the baby probably won't care for it to much either IMO.
