Live Rock ??
Hey people got a ? about live rock for ya. I live on the gulf of mexico and we have several spots with rock jetties (i guess it would be live rock) that have been there for oober years, I have scuba'd them many times and they look they would be pretty cool rocks for me aquarium.
I guess my ? is...if I can find a small rock or chip off a piece from a bigger one, would I have to cure this rock? |

Depending on how close your tank parameters match the parameters from where your pulling from. Also how long the rock would be out of the water/exposed?

I would try and cure it to be on the safe side. However if your tank parameters match the ocean and the rock is not out fo the water it should not be a proble. There could also be some pests hitchhiking on the rock.

Make sure the country you are in doesn't have laws about taking the rock from the ocean. You aren't allowed to take rock from many places around the world and some will also carry a very large fine.

you'd be well served by investigating the local laws regarding such things. i know here in florida it's illegal to collect liverock and i believe there are pretty hefty penalties for doing so. you might also consider the environment you're taking away from the animals that live there.

Is the jettie man made or a natural structure? If its man made, then the rock probably didn't originate from the sea and probably wouldnn't be of good use. "Live rock" in terms of a reef aquarium are calcium based, typicaly pieces of old dead SPS colonys. If they built a jettie of stone, I would be scared of the mineral and contaminant risk. If you do decide to use this rock, I would clean and cure it for quite some time. Unfortunately this kinda defeats the whole "live" purpose. Also, the more pourous it is, the better. So be selective.

I was under the impression and was told that even man made(concrete, other stone like limestone...etc) rock like at the jetties was game on, if has been in the ocean/gulf for so long that it contains bacteria that would be sweet for me tank.
