Low Iron glass is it worth the extra $$

I'm going to be having a tank made and was considering using low iron glass on the viewable sides. If anyone has any experience with it is it worth the extra $$?

I don't have the low iron glass, but I have seen a comparison. Someone posted a photo of standard glass and the starfire on top of a newspaper. The low iron was a remarkable difference. If I ever get a custom tank it will have the low iron.....

Maybe someone can chime in and point you to that photo.

Depends on how thick the glass is... Anything thicker than 1/2" the difference is quite noticeable. Anything less and IME it's not worth the extra $$

I didn't have it on the 390, but I do on the 300. The difference is amazing.

I agree with Hop, but I still prefer acrylic, over using glass, for large tanks.

Yes definatly wort the cost. This is my newly set up 335, 72x30x36. It has starphire front and sides. I don't have a close up of the side of the glass. It is ice blue on the front and the back is dark gree, major difference. This tank is PPG starphire 19mm on all sides by Concept Aquariums.

I have seen some pics of the two different glasses next to each other and the starphire does look so much more clear.

BTW Plato I love the tank!!

I'm going with a tanks that is either 36" or 48" square and will only need the low iron glass on 2 sides as the tank is going in the corner of the room. It will also be rimless what depth should I go with 16" or 24"?

No less than 24" on the height unless the surface can be kept perfectly smooth and uncovered to look down into. Especially if you have any sand at all. For a lookdown tank 16" is fine.
I too have Starphire and can't imagine going back to a green glass tank if it's 1/2" or thicker

If you want it it's worth it. I've seen them both ways but I've never looked into one without it and thought that the tank looked bad because it didn't have it. So for me the answer would be "No, it's not worth it."

I looked at it this way. I'm buying a 10000 dollar peice of art . If the guy at the gallery said for another $500 you could see the picture better it would be a no brainer.

O.K. I'm going with the starphire glass. The tank will be used as a look down as well as a front and side view.

Discustopia said a 16" tall does anyone else have a 16" tall or should I just go with a 24" tall?
