Are Odyssea T5's any good?

Im looking for a small T5 set up for over my sump, I have seen a couple of these on E-Bay.. Are they any good thanks Greg

Doesn't appear to include bulbs...and for that price I'd pas. Look into a 24" nova extreme if you're going to light your fuge. Come with 2 bulbs and are a commonly used brand. I've one at an angle in my display for the extra actenic...and it holds up great. I bought a 24" for 70 bucks...of course it only has two sockets...but for 140...I thing it's a good deal.

NO! No individual reflectors, and I'd suspect poor bulbs and ballasts... Lighting is never something to skimp on and more times than not you get what you pay for.

I just bought a GLO hood for T5's come in 24 or 36 inches... singles and doubles... HO too... they put out huge ammounts of light... reminds me of a halide

Personally, I'd stay far away from all the knockoff/cheap lighting on ebay. Unless you know exactly what you're shopping for that goes for most of the stuff on ebay.

odyssea is never good. www.fishneedit.com has really good T5HO setups for an even better price. I have the 36" 4x39w setup on my 40 gal. My friend has the 24" 4x24W setup. We are both very pleased with them. The bulbs are good enough and they have individual reflectors. I really recomend this light. its a pretty darn good light with a great price

Looks like one reflector that's bent up a bunch...

CaliReefer, your bulbs were included? For $90 with bulbs thats a steal.. Would 4 24 watt T5s be enough to support sps frags? My DT is very well lit, do you think coral could make that transition?

Yea the reflectior is one big one but it is shaped such that it acts are 4 separate reflectors. You can probably get away with some SPS with the 4x24w light. Although I would say if your main purpose is to do SPS with that tank I would go with the 150. The 4x24w would definately be suitalble for a good amount of SPS though.

I am very happy with them. They put out a lot of light, the legs are very sturdy and it flips up toward the back so that you have more open space when working on the tank and you don't have to reach under them. It does not have any fans but it is well ventilated and does not get too warm. I personally met the two owners of the company. They are very new and have great customer service. If something is shipped and is damaged in transit they will be happy to send you a brand new one for free..(they cover shipping also). In fact I happed to live close to them and they personally drove out a part to my house that had been mishandled by the USPS. The fixtures are a great deal

Calireefer, what other light fixtures have you owned to compare them to? Also, what type of ballasts and bulbs are they using? I just don't know of any quality bulbs or ballasts that they could possibly use and still charge that price.

The other light fixtures I have owned are a 2x96w Coralife PC setup and a 2x250W halide w/ 4x24w T5 by oddysea. Im not sure what kind or company ballasts they are. They are relatively small but every review I have read from people who have these lights like them. Im sure the bulbs do not have the highest PAR rating but they are not bad. My tank has been flourishing under them. They could be easily upgraded to nicer bulbs if one wanted to and still save money.

Obviously if someone decides to spend $400 on a T5HO setup it will be nicer with better ballasts and bulbs but if your not looking to get the "top of the line" lights out there these lights are great because they work fine and they have a great price.

You said this is for your sump, correct? What do you plan on keeping in your sump? Is it just gonna be like a fuge cause if so, don't even bother with this, just get a couple flood lights from some place like home depot or lowes or wherever. I mean this isn't too bad if it's just going over a fuge.

Very good point by Dante. Most people don't spend more than $5-$15 on a light for their sump/fuge. I use a 26w CF bulb from Lowes, and it's perfectly fine for chaeto as well as the xenia and mushroom frags I grow in there.

Yup, I keep some of those clamp-on desklamps over my fuge. They give off a very ugly light but my chaeto and...errr other algae enjoys it and hey, they cost like what... $10 each?

Not sure where you guys are getting the sump and fuge thing... He asked about SPS frags at one point so even if it is a sump it sounds like it's going to double as an area for frags.

Sorry for the delay, Yes I would like to keep sps, lps and softies from my DT to off set some $$ thats why Im leaning towards the 150 watt DE bulb.

Ahhhh, ok then in that case get a simple T5 fixture, a 150W DE bulb will be fine though.

If you really want to do SPS in there I would go with a clip on Viper 150w MH. That would be perfect for a tank that size that you intend on doing SPS, LPS, Softies, and whatnot. With a T5 setup you will probably be fine with most but if you really want to keep your options with different kinds of corals I would spend a little more money and get a nice little clip on 150w halide
