Powerheads
Hi all. This is my first post here on RC, Hope I'm in the right forum. I am looking to upgrade my powerheads on my 90 gal reef. Right now I have 3 Maxijet 900's and I'm not that thrilled with them. Can someone give me some advice on good powerhaeds?

Hi Jim,
To Reef Central I would start by looking at Koralia or Tunze. Both offer controllable and non controllable powerheads to suite your reefs needs. If you're on a super tight budget(who isn't these days )you might want to look into modifying your Maxi-jets. |

Vortech pumps are expensive but i think they have the best features on the market. Just 1 vortech would provide great flow for a 90.

I would go with the maxi mod or if the budget allows, a vortech. I have always been a fan of atleast two PH's in the tank. You need some redundancy. One PH is never enough for a tank, there is always the possibility it will stop working. I have had Tunze streams lock up and vortechs fall off the glass. You could get a vortech and a maxi! They dont all have to be the same PH brand.

2 Koralia #4's would be under $100.00 total & they include magnets. That's what I run.
Vortechs & Tunze are of course the elite of powerheads but it takes at least $750 to play that game, IMO. |
