Switching Lights

I am currently switching my Power Compact Lighting with a Metal Halide system. Should I start off the MH slowly, like a few hours a day and ramp it up as the days go on?

Any sugguestions... Please help do not want to stress the fish out with brighter lights...

Also I do not have any corals yet..

From prior reading you are on the right track wanting to acclimate the tank to the new lights. You could use screening from a window to dissipate some of the light in the tank
