Depends on if you're dosing your tank with purple up (Hahaha...j/k...people hate that stuff). Honestly it varies...on lighting and if you maintain proper calcium levels and what not.

I agree. In one of my tanks the coraline is great but the other tank - it is taking long to get started. that is why I seeded that other tank.

FYI
One tank, alk 130 ca 380 MH and VHO - very little.
The other tank alk 120 ca 340 using Compact - a lot of coraline.

i still don't understand how to dose the calcium, but most of my corals are softies and people at the local fish store said that i don't need to dose calcium but a regular water change. Was wondering if it's true.

It depends -

Stony corals use calcium. This is present in salt mixes. If the need does not outweigh what is provided - then no dosing is needed. Softies - do not use calcium.

Best bet is to test if you have stonies. Look for shifts in the calcium, mag and alk. If the levels stay in acceptable ranges and say the calcium is not steadily decreasing, then you will probably not need to dose.

dosing is pretty easy and many methods are available. If you post what corals you have, you may get better responses.

I don't know the how true this is but I have read that coraline algae prefers actinic lighting.

I am not sure there is a magic recipe for coraline algae, but there are three components that must be present - calcium, alkalinity, and proper lighting. If you are lacking any one of these components you may either experience slow or no growth. I have one tank that has great coraline growth and one that has none - I use the same water, dosing, and lighting in both.

The best advice I have is be patient.

keep in mind that you can have all the right parameters and still not have coraline grow if you mag is not in line.

Ca, Alk, Mg, low to medium lighting, low nutrients, flow, and patience.

Be careful what you wish for though, once it takes off, you'll be balancing the first 3 for quite a while. Oh and scraping a lot.
