rate my setup.
hey all,
ive just bought a 6x2x2.5h tank, (225g US or 850ltrs) intended for mixed reef, with small amount of sps and clams in future. im running a sump system and was planning the following..... Reef Octopus core + pentair 1500i skimmer, i choose this because i can fit it under the stand. Ehiem compact + 5000, return pump, adjustable from 2500ltrs-5000ltrs PH. 4x vortech mp40w powerheads. tunze auto top off system. i already have 2x 250w 14k halides, need to get another. lowbay style, with reflector inserts. sps will b towards top. this system will run a refuge. i havent added calcium reactors, chillers etc i want to see how we run b4 buying these items. anything im missing, any comments plz feel free to tell me if im heading in the wrong direction equipment wise. Cheers Dougie

I'm sorry, you've confused this hobby with a quantitative sport.
What do you need for a perfect 10 you ask? Hmmm... Miranda Kerr, to put it simply. Let me know how that goes. Oh, and I say 7 and a half. Why? Because it looks better than average, but there is ALWAYS room for improvement. Kind of makes bragging a real drag. Okay, now disregard and enjoy the photo. But not too much. |

i should clear something up, i should not have used the word RATE in the title, although its been nice to get some nice scores
wat im after is some advice and opinions on the equipment i have choosen so far ( nothing bought but tank), for example, if u think a different skimmer and the reasons for it, noise, heat, watever. sorry for confusion, Cheers Dougie.

have you considered another stand? with a tank that size, i would speculate, 6-10 more inches in the vertical would be nice.
that glass looks thick, you wont trick your friends too many times, into helping you move it. c

this is more like it.., thanks for the responses guys.
r-balljunkie: yes i have. the stand in the pics is around 600 high (2ft) so skimmer choice is limited, thats y im thinking the RO is a good pick. also the stand does have doors, not sure y they were off in this pic. EleganceMan: i havent had much experience with the vortechs so maybe it is overkill, lol. if i can get away with less, well sweet! more money in my pocket! they go for around $600 in australia. im pretty happy with lighting choice, because i only plan on keeping less light sensitive corals, and the little amount of sps i might try in future will b towards the top. and also the electricity bill lol!

tunze auto top off system. <-- this i never understand, for a few more bucks you can get a controller that not only controls top off but soo many other things. pony up a little more and get a reefkeeper lite or a aqua controller JR.

i dont think four vortechs is overkill...i have two on a tank less than half your size and have them running at about 85%....but then again i have nearly all sps. i guess if youre going with a mixed reef you could get away with less.
also i've been using the tunze ATO for two years without a hitch. maybe going with a controller is better, but thats something i've never used as i have nightmares about one product malfunctioning that controls your entire system. i'll stick with my Ca, kalk, de-nitra, phosphate reactors and ATO all running independantly.... at least for now.
