80 gal setup help me choose a skimmer

I recently purchased an existing tank from someone on craigs list who had neglected it pretty badly.

I currently have a aquac remora skimmer but the cup is continuously filling with clear water. There does not seem to be any way to adjust the level of skim on this model.

I will be setting up a sump within the next month and would like to replace the HOB skimmer with something that may work a little better. What would you guys recommend for my setup?

ASM and Reef Octopus are great skimmers for the money. If you are looking to spend more, the Euro Reef and Deltecs are great as well. You can actually adjust the skim with the Remora, just move the rubber band lower on the collection cup (so it sits higher in the skimmer) and that will dry the foam out a bit. Good luck with the new tank, sounds like you have your work cut out but know what you are getting into!

Mine does not seem to have any rubber band on it. Is it supposed to be around the entire collection cup? Currently I have wedged something around the side to hold it up but it makes adjustment rather difficult.

That is correct, there should be a big O-ring around the whole collection cup. This is used to adjust the height of the cup, which controls the amount of foam.

The instructions tell you to coat the O-ring with petrolium jelly, to keep it from cracking and drying out. Without doing that, the O-ring will usually fall apart in about 3-6 months (Ask me how I know.)

I'd contact AquaC and order a new O-ring first, before spending on a whole new skimmer.
