stray voltage?

thanks for your time.

I've hadmy tank for over 4 years. Tonight, for the first time, I got a low volatage shock emptying my skimmer cup - felt like I was touching the spark plug ofa lawnmower, but less. My display tank is on the first floor, my sump is in the basement. I unplugged everyhting, then went to touch the cup again, another shock. Any ideas what could be causing it? The only items still plugged in was the powereheads in my display tank, and my tunze top off system. Whats the safest way to identify the cause? I do have a voltage meter, but I'mnot sure, its safe to dip the silver colered probes in the water.

Thanks!

Yeah you can dip those probes in there. Test it by unplugging everything until the stray voltage is found and replace that piece of equipment. Some people use grounding probes to remove the stray voltage but that's a debate in itself.
