Cynobacteria
What's the best way to deal with cynobacteria once you've got it? Is there a trick to syphoning it out?

I have used the redslime remover twice and it did kill all the cyano. It also killed my cleaner shrimp both times, so keep that in mind. The second time it also bleached out 4 of my corals. I won't use it again. If you decide to use it start with very small amounts and be ready to make lots of water changes. Thats my thoughts.

Chemi-clean works great but it is only a bandage. You need to get rid of your phosphates. Check the water you are using and the water in your tank. Try looking into phosban or similar products. Check to make sure you have good circulation. Don't overfeed your tank. All of these things can cause Cyano.

Phosphate is 0, Nitrate <5, my problem is lighting - I've been getting up at 11am because of work so I haven't noticed that someone has been turning on the lights at 6am when they leave, giving me an 18hr photoperiod for about 10 days before I figured it out. I was thinking a 72hr no light period, then a massive clean at the end of it - w/c and syphon out all the algae I can see, 2 days with lights on 8hrs, then another 48hr photoperiod, along with another w/c and syphon.
I can't find any of those chemicals in NZ, and I'd prefer not to use any when I know what the cause is. |
