Purigen vs polyfilter vs carbon

curious to know if one is reaaly that much better than the other or do you prefer to use combo media and what is your reasoning and results that you see?

No one has any input on this? I am curious what people use other than skimming on their reefs or FOWLR

I would try this in the Chemistry forum.

Also, I'm currently using both GAC (carbon) and a polyfilter disc in my BRS. Also, thinking of adding in some Purigen. I'm looking for dissolved organic reduction from these things, and since I have no good way to measure it, I'm going by the amount of algae build up on my front DT acrylic pane.

Carbon and GFO definitely reduce this, and hopefully the polyfilter will too. I think the polyfilter is also supposed to remove excess trace metals...

Thanks for your reply I am going to try purigen alonng with polyfilter in place of carbon for awhile .Purigen supposedly can lower nitrates directly and well polyfilter has an excellent rep for removal of most other things from PO4 to organics and meds.

I experimented with Purigen for awhile. The problem I had was that the medium is tiny ion-exchange resin balls. It's really difficult to find a suitable container for it that will allow sufficient flow and not get clogged. I was using it in a DI resin cartridge and, for awhie, it worked great. But eventually the cartridge clogged and that was that. It does reduce nitrates though.

I will use an aquaclear filter with a resin bag by SEachem that should do the trick.
