Do I need a refugium ?
I am currently planning to build a custom sump tank out of acrylic for my tank. I am building my own due to the lack of space under the tank. My question is do I really need a refugium. I have a 55 gallon corner tank with 90-100 lbs of coraline covered live rock. I have a CPR cs90 overflow, a aquac urchin skimmer with mag 3, a mag 5 return pump, and a coralife turbo twist UV sterilizer.
I also have seen several tanks like this (with no refugium) with just a skimmer where the water comes in, some micro bubble baffles, and then the return compartment. I am just wanting to get some more opinions on this. |

If you didnt have one what would happen? Is the only bonus to having one is that you have extra biological filtration? If you had a reef set up with only a skimmer would it function just fine?
