Soak it in a bleach solution then rinse and let it air dry

Bleach is OK for taking care of the organic matter but I find the sun does a better job at getting it white. Now I just soak in bleach to clean it and then leave it in the sun until it's nice and white. In my office i've created some pretty cool reef scapes with skeletons.

And how long does it usually take for them to become nice and white in the sun?

I guess it all depends on the weather. I never really timed it, I just put them out there and bring them in when they're as white as I want. The longer the whiter they get, probably days to weeks, the sun has amazing bleaching properties.
What are you doing with them? |

Whats the best alternative in cold weather. I prefer not to use bleach because it will stink up my garage which the wife will not like. Not too much sun going around these days in NJ and we are getting some snow tomorrow. Any ideas? I can leave it out between snow and rain but can I just hose it off. Dead coral has algae on it.

Sunlight alone... Any frags or colonies that I dry out in the sun are bone white...

There are a ton of different coral that have broken off reefs and washed up on Palm Beach in Florida after Hurricane Irma. I took a chunk (it is dense like a sponge) and have no idea what type of coral it is. It is still attached to a chunk of rock. It's large enough to fit sideways into a Home Depot bucket. It's been sitting in a mixture of water and a little bit of bleach since Tuesday night. What should I do with it now? And it will it harden?
