Chemi-pure Elite Question
Has any one used this stuff to help battle nitrates and phosphates? I was told to just put the bag in the sump in a high flow area and it will work. If I put it in the sump should I put it before or after the cheato? Because dosent' the cheato need the nitrates to grow?

I have used it. Buy regular chemi-pure and use GFO for PO$ removal. I thing they overstate their claims. I used chemi pure exclusively changing it monthly for discus in freshwater and it worked great. I am now trying bulkreefsupply.com carbon to see how well it works in my reef tank.

I love it, and use it now and then in my reef tank. I don't expect it to reduce nitrates, but it reduces organics and other crap from the water column, and clears up my water very quickly. Highly recommended
I would put it after the cheato, to absorb the "gelbstoff" that comes from the algae in the refugium. |

we need cheato to consume nitrates 'not' feed the cheato nitrates in other words if own tanks didn't produce nitrates, cheato's only purpose would be to grow pods and liverock will do that. So don't worry if there is no nitrates for the cheato because thats the goal anyway. Don't worry the cheato won't starve it feeds of the light too and nitrate only aids in its growth.
On to the chemi-pure IMO you shouldn't use a chemical to battle water chemistry"problems", there are exceptions but it is usualy when something is low like Ca or Mg. Find out why you have phosphates or nitrates and fix that problem first but nomatter what you can bet it will end in a water change any way. low flow. flake food. tap water and lack of water changes are all 'some' of the things that can phos and/or trate problems

badwrasse, I can't figure out why I have a po4 and nitrate problem. I was doing a 20 gal water change every week, now I'm doing a 3-6 gal change every other day and still have the problem. I use only RO/DI and feed frozen food after it has been thawed and drained and I have lots of flow.

I barley feed them as it is. No, I don't run any carbon or anything. I know it sounds dumb, but what is gfo?

ok, thanks. I'm going to let this chemi-pure run for a couple of days and see if there is a change if not then I guess I will have to get phosban or gfo.

I have 4 koralias 2 #4's, a #2 and a#3. I use API test kit and I don't know what brand name skimmer it is, it came with the tank. I turned my old 55 gal tank into my sump. My DT is 85gal.

seapug, this stuff says it has ferric oxide in it. I will have to use this for a few days at least untill I can get a PhosBan reactor. By the way sweet tank and congrats on the tank of the month.
